Hello, I'm BJ Penn, welcome to the most interesting page on this site.
Here is where you will find the people and the stories behind our work.

Monday, October 26, 2009 at 7:00AM We've been training hard! And the last two classes have been, primarily, about BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu). One of our classes turned into a strength-training class, as the UFC television show was using the mat for an interview with BJ. Well, that's Hollywood!

Another class was lead by World Champion Reagan Penn --and Michael Wozniak, and according to the team, it was a blast. Lost of skill building games and grappling.
THEN CAME THE CHAMPIONS! In the 12th class, this last Friday, UFC Champions and Fighters BJ Penn, Kendall Grove, and Shane Nelson came down to roll with the team. Add to that Kelley Weatherford was visiting from her school in Reno, Nevada --and it all came together for some very find memories (and great training). As always, we topped off class with some extensive "mental martial arts" --where we talked about the mindset of a championship life.
Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at 6:16PM Well team, we LOST most of the footage from tonight's class due to camera failure --but I was able to save a few minutes. To compensate for that, I'm adding a couple of videos for you to watch, some of my favorite martial arts videos on youtube...and something I like called "The Story of Stuff."
You're all doing a good job -and I really enjoy your company and the effort you put into your training. Hope you're enjoying yourself as well!
Coach Tom

Saturday, October 10, 2009 at 11:21PM What a gift it is to hang out with people who hold themselves to "world class" standards. It reminds me (and I hope it reminds you too) that the PEOPLE you have out with have a HUGE impact on one's thinking. Lesson: HANG out with good people, doing good work in the world, living health, doing positive things, and helping others.
Here's a video of your "teacher of the day," Annetta Lucero, winning the world championships in Italy in 1983.

Saturday, September 26, 2009 at 8:09AM What you see in this video is BJ Penn --BUT, it's also YOU. Someday YOU will be in a position to offer others words and actions that inspire (it might be this week?!).
What you see here is someone who works in his community. I want you to be that kind of person too (and you don't have to be a World Champion to do it).
Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at 6:32PM This was our 3rd class -and we covered front, side, round, back, and even spin-hook kick (which is only because you are exceptional students --as this is material rarely covered in a 3rd class! Oh yes, and jump front kick too.
I talked about rating yourself on a scale from 1 to 10, yes?
I also mentioned that 50 to 90% of communication is non-verbal...so pay attention to your own -and others.
AND...let's see, Oh yeah, "The Polite Greeting!" Again good work team, see you on Friday!
Coach Tom --and Assistant Coach Michael Wozniak (also the camera man today!)
Sunday, September 20, 2009 at 9:00PM Brian, who you can see in this video, started studying the martial arts with me when he was 4. Rori, with the black hair started at age 10, and Kelly has been a friend and student for more than 20 years.
We may meet Brian, as he's on a school lecture tour with his organization, www.thinkkindness.org and Soles for Souls --and I'm going to see if we can book him in some local schools.
Anyway, I have mentioned him in class and I wanted to introduce you to his work. I coined a saying, "Out of the dojo and into the world" --which is about taking your martial arts training off of the mat -and using it for things that are, well...you know, REALLY important in the world.
This team is definetly taking out of the dojo...

Saturday, September 19, 2009 at 6:13AM Today's the day we're meeting at the Breakwall (9:00 am) in Hilo to participate in International Coastal Clean Up day! Call me at 530-903-0286 if you need directions. The image, above is a picture of a painting done by artist --and my friend, Robert Phelps. Here's a portrait Robert did of our very own Bj Penn:

Oh, and I mentioned www.TED.COM in our last class --and here is the specific video I was talking about (about ocean plastic pollution):

Friday, September 18, 2009 at 5:57PM Hi team, in today's class we covered warm ups, rolls and some heavy duty dive rolls, our "stop the guy from hitting you on the ground" drill, "the Monster drill," stances, footwork, and basic BJJ Positions. Here's a video of our friends, John Will and David Meyer teaching the monster drill:
Oh, and then I asked a student to pick a number "between 1 and 100" and he picked 99! So we did 99 push ups!
Then we had a talk called "acres of diamonds." Here's the story, told by the first man I ever heard tell it, Mr. Earl Nightengale: http://www.edwardconti.com/?p=43

Thich Nhat Hahn is a peace activist, author, and a teacher extraordinaire. He was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize by Dr. Martin Luther King in 1967.Today, he still teaches peace -and, I think, in a way that every martial arts student would do well to be familiar with.
